Introduction to Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP):
Principles for assessing and tailoring the treatment to the patients capacity
This two-day presentation will introduce the theoretical foundation and basic principles of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). The first day will include an overview of the treatment model with an emphasis on principles for in-session assessment of patients’ defenses and anxiety pathways. In the afternoon, the presentation will focus on the so-called “graded format” of ISTDP, which is used to build capacity with patients that exhibit structural deficits and low tolerance of affect and anxiety. The second day will focus on how to assess and work with patients with higher structural capacity but also higher levels of syntonic defenses and in-session resistance to experiencing emotions. Particular emphasis will be on timing of specific interventions to help patients see and let go of treatment obstructive resistance. Over the course of the two days, video segments from actual therapy sessions will be used to illustrate the principles of ISTDP.
Some of the learning objectives include:
- The meta-psychology of ISTDP and the basic treatment principles
- How to recognize and assess patients’ anxiety pathways
- Ways to regulate high levels of anxiety
How to assess and recognize different forms of defense and resistance
Timing of specific interventions to help patients let go of defenses and experience emotions directly in session
